Although more peaceful than its neighbours – thanks to a sense of nationhood instilled by its famous socialist founding father Julius Nyere – Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the region, with life expectancy just 46.
Despite being almost four times bigger than the UK, only four percent of land is good for cultivating crops - much of the country is extremely dry.
HIV medicine is free, but access is still a problem, and the country struggles to cope with large numbers of children orphaned by AIDS - for example, an estimated 40,000 children in the Diocese of Moshi alone.
We provide drought-resistant crops and water points for vulnerable communities, as well as support for community health workers and care for children affected by HIV.
