campaigning tips

Signing your name on a petition, email or postcard takes a few seconds. But it shows you care enough about an issue to put your name to it. You can even add a personal message to show why this issue matters to you.

It costs nothing but can have a remarkable impact. 420,000 CAFOD supporters added their names to the Jubilee 2000 petition, calling for the debt owed by poor countries to be cancelled.

This petition was a record-breaker – 24 million people around the world signed. $110 billion dollars of debt was cancelled, freeing up money for hospitals and schools. A great return for just signing your name!

This kind of action makes politicians sit up and listen as it shows that huge numbers of people, from all walks of life, are all calling for change. It also opens doors for our policy team to talk direct to the people in power. Once politicians know that public opinion is behind a course of action, they are strengthened to actually do it.

I believe in citizenship – signing a card is an invitation to feel part of our society and to have a voice. A lot of people in other countries don’t have an opportunity like this."
