Food off-timetable day
Use this selection of CAFOD activities for a dynamic off-timetable day for secondary students on the theme of food and hunger. Suitable for KS3, KS4, Post-16.
Setting the scene
Set the scene by watching one of the short IF campaign videos. Explain that the day will investigate why 1 in 8 people go to bed hungry and what we can do to help change this. Conclude with an image and prayer taken from our short reflections.
Starters
In groups, use one or more starter activities. For example, do the food quiz, then spend a few minutes discussing students' reactions and asking how much they already know.
Morning activity
Scatter sections from the food system poster around the room. Challenge students to spend 10 minutes investigating and deciding the top three problems with the global food system. Debrief using the summary of what needs to change found on page 3 of the young people's guide to Hungry for change.
Lunch with a difference!
Celebrate a global reality meal, where students experience for themselves something of the unfairness in the global food system. Allow students some free time afterwards.
Alternatively, ask students to write their own grace before meals using our template.
Afternoon activities
Take the Hungry for Change action. Even after the June G8 meeting, this action remains relevant, as world leaders have other opportunities to improve the global food system.
Concluding your day
In groups, give students a few minutes to think about what they have learned. Ask each student to cut out a food shape and write on it one thing they will remember from today.
End with the food assembly, at some point asking each student to place his or her food image onto a display board.
