Please help us meet the needs of the thousands of people affected by the crisis in Eastern DR Congo. [Taylor Kakala/Caritas Congo]

What has happened?

Over the last few months, a rebel group called M23 has occupied large areas of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and the conflict has forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. On 20 November, M23 occupied the strategically important town of Goma.

What are the needs?

Even before the recent escalation in the conflict, about 50,000 people displaced by the fighting were living in camps north of Goma. Since M23 occupied the town, our Caritas partners have carried out an assessment which suggests that there are now around 160,000 people either living in camps or taking refuge with local families. Thousands of others are taking refuge in church buildings. Many people are in urgent need of food, water, shelter and household kits.

What is CAFOD doing?

We have pledged £200,000 to respond to the current crisis, working with local Church partners. So far, we have worked with Caritas Goma to provide tents, blankets and household kits to people who’ve been forced from their homes in and around Goma. We have staff on the ground who are coordinating our response.
