What has happened?

A major food crisis is affecting more than 18 million people across West Africa’s Sahel region (Niger, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Chad).

What are the needs?

More than 18 million people are facing severe food shortages, and more than a million children under the age of five are threatened by severe acute malnutrition. With the next harvest still weeks away, we need to act now to prevent a catastrophe.

What is CAFOD doing?

What your money can buy:

£9 – cereal and vegetable oil to feed a family for a week

£32 – cash-for-work project for a family for 20 days

£91 – one month’s salary for a nurse at a nutrition centre

We are working in Niger, Mali, Chad and Mauritania to:

  • provide treatment for severely malnourished children and food for their families
  • pay people in cash or food to work on projects that are vital for their communities (like improving farmland to make sure water is retained in the soil)
  • set up and support village granaries – a long-term solution to the food crisis
