Development board trip report
Development Board Members Oliver Pawle and Christopher Kemball visited Zambia in April 2011 to find out more about how From Poverty to Opportunity is making a difference to the lives of the poorest of the poor.
“The Zambian people we met on our trip made me feel very humble. First, the priests and nuns we met were so impressive: completely dedicated to their work and with a beautiful simplicity of spirit. One in particular, Sister Yvonne from the Mbala Mission, in addition to her community and divine office duties, spends every day driving a large vehicle over mud roads ministering to the outlying villages.
Then there are the volunteers, many of them HIV positive, who freely give their time to educate and treat the villagers, as well as the paralegal advisers who provide counselling and mediation services to those who are unable to help themselves.
We met Delipher who was in her fourth year of legal studies at Lusaka University and had taken a year out to work in one of the legal advice centres. Once she qualifies as a lawyer, she wants to form a group of female barristers to represent wronged women in court for free. But, above all, I will remember the amazing cheerfulness and sense of humour of everyone we met.”
