Portsmouth Oaklands School students budget action

Sixth Formers from the CAFOD Action Group at Oaklands Catholic School pledged to write to their MPs last month as part of the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign.

The group are sending letters asking MPs Mark Hoban (Fareham), Penny Mordaunt (Portsmouth North) and David Willetts (Havant) to write to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor on their behalf.

One in eight people go to bed with the pain of hunger. These students want politicians act – to keep promises on life saving aid, and to spill the beans on tax dodging in developing countries.

The Oakland students are leading the way in making their voices heard. During the next two weeks, we’re asking you to get in touch with your MP. Whether you prefer to email your MP, meet them or write them a letter, what matters is that every MP from every party hears loud and clear that global hunger matters to their constituents.

By calling for transparency, the students also want to see developing countries have access to more information about how much tax UK companies owe. This could help them collect the money they’re owed and generate funds needed to end hunger.

CAFOD Campaigns manager Claudia Elliot says: “This year, the UK government has a golden opportunity to take an international lead in tackling global hunger. This year’s Budget could kick-start the end of world hunger, but only if the Chancellor confirms that from 2013, Britain delivers on the long-promised target of 0.7% of national income to be spent on life-saving aid, to stop children dying of hunger and help the poorest people feed themselves.”

The Budget will be announced on 20 March. This will be our first big chance, as part of the IF… campaign, to get the UK government to tackle global hunger.
