Hungry for change: CAFOD supporter lives on rations for Lent
When it comes to cooking and eating, lifelong CAFOD supporter Claud Mba is travelling back in time 70 years this Lent.
She will be living on 1943 rations for the whole six-week season in order to raise awareness about global hunger, support our Hungry for change campaign and raise much-needed funds for our work to tackle poverty and hunger in some of the world’s poorest countries.
As an act of solidarity with people who don’t have enough to eat around the world, Claud is being sponsored to live on 1943 food rationsthis Lent (13 February - 30 March). By 1943, most food was rationed in the UK and almost no imports were getting in, so this meant very limited cheese, meat, tea and many other basic foods. See Claud’s full ration here >>
While it was nothing like a starvation diet, it certainly meant having to think and plan what you were going to eat. Rationing was probably the only time in living memory that food wasn’t in abundant supply in the UK.
Lack of choice
Claud is now over a third the way through her time living on rations. She said: “So far the hardest thing a radical cut back on choice. I’ve definitely got enough to eat, but I’m learning that as soon as food is scarce, choice becomes a luxury.
“There are so many people in our world who have to make devastating choices every day. Choices like, which of my children will get dinner today? We produce enough food to feed the world – but one in eight people don’t have enough to eat.
“We all have choices to make. Some of those choices are life and death, and others are a luxury. But we can all choose to end the injustice that means millions of people go hungry. If you, like me, want all children to grow up with choices and opportunities, then please sign our Hungry for Change petition, and support our Lent appeal.”

Throughout this year, CAFOD is raising money and awareness about global hunger. We’re campaigning to make world leaders take action on this issue, and raising money, to help make sure children and families get their share of the world's abundance.
You don’t have to live on rations to support Claud or to add your voice to CAFOD’s calls for a world free from hunger.
