Thinking big, acting small at the G20
Thinking big, acting small: How the G20 should approach economic development and recovery in developing countries
The G20 countries meet this week in Seoul, South Korea. CAFOD welcomes the group's commitment to discussion on the adoption of a “development agenda” at this summit and calls on the G20 to "think big and act small" through sustainable economic development that puts small famers and small- and micro-businesses at its heart.
We believe the G20 must:
• Focus on the needs of poor farmers and small and micro-businesses owned by poor men and women when deciding policy choices and spending priorities;
• Ensure that foreign direct investment and multinationals operating in developing countries contribute to, and do not undermine, local development and environmental sustainability.
• Adopt an international framework that supports global economic stability, environmental sustainability and that is conducive to the trade, finance and investment prospects of developing countries.
We’ll be bringing our new policy briefing paper, ‘Thinking Big, Acting Small’, to the G20 Summit in Seoul to ensure the needs of the poorest in developing nations are not drowned out and that world leaders look towards the support of economic development that achieves balanced, sustainable and resilient growth and that also reduces poverty.
