Haiti earthquake - three years on
We are continuing to support the Haitian people as they recover from one of the most devastating earthquakes in recent history.
Pray for the people of Haiti>>
The earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 killed an estimated 230,000 people, and forced more than a million from their homes.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, we launched our Haiti earthquake appeal. You raised a remarkable £5.3 million, which has provided:
- tents and shelters for thousands of people immediately after the quake
- permanent, disaster-proof homes
- safe water supplies and latrines to prevent the spread of disease – in camps and as people moved back into more permanent shelters
- cholera units in hospitals
- emergency support when storms and hurricanes strike

Preparing for the future
Even before 2010, Haiti was the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and it’s hard to over-estimate the scale of destruction caused by the earthquake. We are committed to making sure that Haitians take the lead in rebuilding their country in years to come. That’s why we’re helping local Catholic organisations to scale up their work, and ensuring that Haitian builders and engineers have the skills they need to build disaster-resistant homes.
This year, two major storms hit Haiti. As well as responding to new emergencies as they happen, we’re working with schools, community groups and farmers to make sure people are better prepared for disasters in the future.
Thank you for supporting our work in Haiti.
