East Africa crisis: how you have helped
Thanks to your remarkable compassion, we have raised £4.9 million in our East Africa Crisis appeal. We also received more than £2 million from the DEC as well as funding from other Catholic agencies from around the world.
Kenya and Tanzania
We reached more than147,000 people in Kenya in the first phase of our response, and are currently targeting more than154,000in the second phase. We are providing:
Food aid: food delivery, cash transfers to the most vulnerable, cash-for-work, food-for-work
Water: drilling new boreholes and improving existing water sources
Help for pastoralists: Veterinary support and animal feed.
Farming: distributing drought-tolerant seeds and training people in new farming methods
Livelihoods: helping people find new ways of making a living
Ethiopia
We are working in a joint programme with our sister agencies Trocaire and SCIAF in Ethiopia. We have targeted more than 160,000 people, providing:
Food aid through direct transfer and cash for work
Help for pastoralists: weterinary support, animal feed, buying weak animals from pastoralists so that they don’t lose their assets
Water tanks
Rehabilitating water-supplies
Improving land, to lessen the effect of future droughts
Somalia
We have provided or are providing food vouchers to 21,500 vulnerable people in some of the worst hit areas of Somalia.
South Sudan
We have reached more than 47,000 people, providing:
Food for people who face shortages because of poor harvests or because they have returned from Sudan
Water and sanitation
Household goods, including sheets, cooking equipment and mosquito nets for families forced to leave their homes.
