Hungry for change campaigner uses her loaf
A York undergraduate has dressed up as a loaf of bread to get fellow students to campaign against world hunger.
Becky Ford, 21, is a student at York St John University and spent her lunchtimes during the week of 21 January walking round campus dressed as a loaf of bread, asking students to sign action cards in support of our Hungry for change campaign against global hunger. After the first day, Becky was joined by Ryan Sandford-Blackburn, the Campaigns and Communications Co-ordinator at York SJ Students Union, who dressed as a fish.

Each signed card calls on David Cameron to use his presidency of the G8 to make a difference to small-scale farmers and to push global food companies into ensuring that workers in the global supply chain get a fair deal.
The Hungry for change action cards focus on the Biblical parable of the loaves and fishes, where giving even a small amount can make a difference to the lives of thousands.
Becky has also been collecting cardboard fish with messages of support from the students, which she has displayed in a net in the Student Union, to draw more attention.
She said, “We’ve been getting a lot of funny looks, but the costumes give us a starting point. I’ve done this kind of thing before without costumes, but having them gets you a lot more attention.”
“So far, everyone’s been really receptive to it. Hunger is something they are well aware of, but often they don’t think they can do anything about it. When we explain, they see that they can help.”
