Harvest celebration at St Elizabeth's Centre

On Harvest Fast Day, Friday 5 October, Vicky Ahmed and Maggie Baker from CAFOD visited St Elizabeth’s Centre in Much Hadham, Hertfordshire - a centre for children and young people with learning difficulties, epilepsy and other special educational needs.

Vicky and Maggie visited three classes looking at the Harvest story about Gift from Zambia through a range of multi-sensory activities with vegetables.

After the sessions they joined the other classes for a shared liturgy, with the theme of sharing around the table. Everyone had a part to play. Many had decorated plates to share, or joined in with singing and signing.

All of the learners then came together for a Fast Day lunch, sharing soup that they had prepared the previous day. One boy, Lewis, gave out Harvest stickers and told people how much they had raised for CAFOD (“nine months of meals!”).

Maggie stayed for the afternoon to talk to the older college learners about CAFOD, using an adaptation of CAFOD’s GCSE RE Faith in Action materials.

Vicky Ahmed said: “I was quite blown away. I’m glad I went along and joined in the celebration with such a warm and caring community that does so much for CAFOD.”
