CAFOD's response to David Cameron’s announcement on the G8 today

CAFOD and other leading charities have released a joint statement, responding to David Cameron’s announcement on the G8 today.

The food and nutrition summit is a great chance to champion aid and tackle the root causes of hunger and malnutrition such as land grabbing and biofuels. Cracking down on tax dodging and pushing for greater transparency will also help poor countries feed their people.

The joint statement read as follows:

"Today's announcement by the Prime Minister is very welcome. We have been arguing that tackling hunger and its drivers is one of the most pressing development challenges today; costing millions of people their lives every year.
 
The agenda the PM has set out can change this. The food and nutrition summit is a great chance to champion aid and tackle the root causes of hunger and malnutrition such as land grabbing and biofuels. Cracking down on tax dodging and pushing for greater transparency will also help poor countries feed their people.

If the PM can make real progress on these issues, this G8 will be recognised as one of the most important in recent history. It's an ambitious agenda but if it's taken forward effectively we can see the beginning of a world in which hunger becomes a thing of the past."
