Tomorrow, Friday 22 February is our annual Lent Fast Day. In churches and schools across England and Wales, CAFOD supporters of all ages will be putting on activities to raise funds and awareness for people around the world who do not have enough to eat.

As ever, we’re inspired and humbled by CAFOD supporters’ commitment and passion for solving poverty. Among the hundreds of ideas for raising money and awareness for our hungry for Change appeal, people are creating hunger cloths (large tapestries made up of panels submitted by individuals and groups), holding an Emmaus Meal or a frugal Fast Day lunch, or holding a big card signing. Some are being even more creative, like Anna and Simon Bourke from Nottingham diocese, who’ve been living on no more than £1 a day on food, or Mike Boswell, who has dressed up as a Supergoat to talk to children in Salford about Tabita and her family in Kenya.

Right now, 870 million people go to bed hungry every night, millions of them children, even though there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. Hunger is the world’s biggest health risk, killing more people annually than the combined effect of diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

Across the world, the price of basic food is expected to double by 2030. In developing countries people spend up to 70% of their income on food, while in richer countries people spend between 10-20% of their income on food.

Our Hungry for Change campaign is calling for a fairer food system. We’re asking Prime Minister David Cameron to use the UK’s Presidency of the G8 to tip the balance of power in favour of small-scale farmers and push for checks on the power of global food companies.

You can join our campaign today, by sending him your message online.

On Fast Day especially, we remember all those people around the world who will go to bed hungry tonight. We can change this, if we act together. Please give, campaign and pray with CAFOD today.
