Ten primary schools from Salford Diocese took part in a concert in Blackburn on Thursday, to celebrate CAFOD’s 50th anniversary.

Around 700 people turned out to hear the choirs. Each school represented sang a song or hymn of their own choosing, before all ten schools joined forces for the final song –Jambo Bwana– accompanied by a DVD of a group of African children from the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya.

A second concert, with schools from the Greater Manchester area, will take place on October 25 at St Patrick’s RC Church, Livesey Street, Manchester.

The concerts are called Share the Harvest, and link CAFOD’s 50th anniversary and Harvest appeal. All the songs at both concerts have some connection to the theme of food or harvest.

Ann Wilson, CAFOD’s manager for the Blackburn area, said: "It was wonderful to see the young people singing in solidarity with their fellow pupils in Kenya."

"2012 marks 50 years of CAFOD's work in the developing world. We’re commemorating this important milestone in a number of ways and we have been keen to include schools and their pupils in our celebrations, in recognition of the support and commitment they have displayed to CAFOD and its work over the years.

"Staff and pupils made a big effort to learn the songs and come to the church on an October evening. The church was buzzing with excitement before the performance and it was great to see how the staff and pupils had taken up the challenge of performing to raise awareness of our Harvest Fast Day theme. Many of the songs were about the good things of the world and how it is fair for all if we share what we have so that everyone has what they need."
