Schools across England and Wales have been fundraising hard for CAFOD’sHungry for Changeappeal this Lent. From recipe books, to fast day lunches, they’ve been helping us do more to tackle global poverty and injustice.

Here are just some of their inspiring stories.

Cooking the books

Pupils from St. Leonard’s school, Durham used culinary creativity to fundraise for CAFOD’s Lent appeal.

They made Fairtrade recipe books to sell to parents and teachers, raising £630 to help some of the 1 in 8 people in our world who are hungry.

Souped-up lunches

St Bernard’s Catholic High School in Rotherham held frugal lunches in support of CAFOD this Lent.

Students and staff raised £170.00 by swapping their normal meal for simple soup and bread, in solidarity with those who regularly go without food.

St Augustine’s Style

St Augustine’s priory, Ealing raised £232 for CAFOD with their very own Gangnam style video. Members of staff joined Students from all year groups to re-enact the popular dance, but with a St Augustine’s twist.

A teacher from St Augustine’s directed us to the video on the school’s website, “as we realised we had raised this money for you but you didn’t know how we had managed it! The girls put lots of effort into it and we had loads of fun.”

Knitting for justice

Year 7 Khianna from Loreto High School, Chorlton and has been busy during Lent, knitting Faitrade mug holders with her Grandma Caroline and Aunt Sonia.

Khianna is part of her school’s Justice and Peace group, who made cakes using Fairtrade ingredients to sell alongside the mug holders for Fairtrade Fortnight.

Khianna says: “I enjoyed telling the teachers information about Fairtrade and how it’s important.”

Pocket money for goats!

Instead of spending his pocket money on sweets and toys, six-year-old Angus from Brentwood saved enough money to buy a CAFOD goat!

Angus learned how goats are changing children’s lives in Kenya and did extra chores to raise money to buy one.

A goat provides up to 12 pints of milk a week for a family to drink or sell. It also provides free fertilizer for the vegetable garden. Goat’s milk kept three-year-old Tabita alive during a drought that hit her community.

“I helped my Nanny and Granddad tidy my toys away I also helped them tidy the kitchen,” Angus says. “I was really happy to be able to buy a goat to help another family who do not have as much as I do. I know that my family and I have lots so it is good to share what we have.”

Huge thanks to all the schools who raised so much for CAFOD’s work this Lent. Your inspiring fundraising will really help us to tackle poverty and hunger in some of the world’s poorest countries.
