Environment and climate change
Our policy work is focussed on ensuring the UK is leading at home and internationally on action to cut greenhouse gas emissions to the level demanded by science and providing poorer countries with resources they need to cope with climate change impacts and build sustainable, pro-poor development paths.
Key areas of our policy work include:
- Ensuring the UK government provides its fair share of climate finance post 2015, scaling up to meet the $100 billion total annually by 2020 promised to poorer countries for climate action, in particular through championing new sources of public finance such as carbon pricing of shipping.
- Ensuring the UK government supports access to sustainable, affordable and modern energy for poor men and women and not energy investments that do not reduce poverty or undermine environmental integrity.
- Ensuring the UK & EU partners champion a fair and legally binding global deal to cut emissions that is agreed by 2015, including greater action at EU level (moving to an emissions cut of at least 30% domestic by 2020), working with our European network CIDSE.
