The ongoing crisis in Darfur, Sudan is getting much worse, and has spread into neighbouring Chad. As the number of people in desperate need increases, CAFOD simply cannot walk away

CAFOD urgently needs your help. Hundreds of men, women and children are still being attacked on a daily basis.

The conflict – one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in more than a decade - has killed more than 200,000 people to date.

Around 4.5 million people are affected, of which more than two million have been forced to flee their homes and are reliant on aid to survive.

What CAFOD is doing

CAFOD has been in Darfur from the outset of this crisis in 2004, working through ACT/Caritas – a network of faith-based and Sudanese aid agencies providing shelter, safe water and sanitation, as well as building health clinics and schools for people living in the camps.

More than 225,000 people have fled into neighbouring Chad, further exacerbating its own internal armed conflict and destabilising an already volatile region.

We would be deeply grateful if you could support our vital work helping the people of Sudan and Chad, and we ask you to keep the men, women and children affected by this crisis in your prayers.

Darfur situation paper, Sept 04 (82.23 kB)

The purpose of this memorandum is to respond to a request from the International Development Select Committee for an analysis from humanitarian organisations into the situation in Darfur. It is not an attempt to give the full historical context of the conflict in Western Sudan or in Sudan as a whole.

Rather, it is an analysis, from the basis of our programmes, of the current humanitarian and political developments in Darfur, with recommendations for UK government policy.
