Conflict, poverty, hunger, and the economy are all affecting development in the DRC

Conflict

Fighting has left appalling levels of hunger, disease and death, and countless abuses of human rights.

Poverty and hunger

More than one-third of the population has critical food needs. In the capital, Kinshasa, a growing number of people eat only once every two or three days. Severe malnutrition rates among children under five.

Economy

DRC is one of the poorest countries - and one of the most in debt - in Africa. It is eleventh from the bottom of the UNDP Human Development Index.

However the country has vast mineral deposits, including diamonds, copper and cobalt.
