The services include pastoral care, education, health, women’s development activities, water programmes, emergency programmes, social communication activities and others. Personnel engaged in delivery of these services play a crucial role in their successful delivery. The challenge is to implement the programmes with greater vigour and insight so as to achieve the intended results. This project focuses on some core areas of CESK capacity development. As a result, PLWHA suffer from lack of attention and care. Therefore, the Catholic Eparchial Secretariat of Keren (CESK) is trying to fill the gap through this project. The aim of the project is to provide preventative and rehabilitative services to 220 PLWHA and 40 orphans living in the Eparchy of Keren. The project will provide counselling and consultation, home-based care, orphan care, social support, micro-credit and health awareness sessions. CESK had been implementing HIV and AIDS activities for more than 10 years. Over a decade of experience has acquainted people with the realities of HIV and AIDS and allowed much needed care and support to be provided to people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. Rising food prices and poor rains are expected to make it even more difficult for households to obtain sufficient food. This project will re-establish CAFOD’s support to the Catholic Church in Eritrea’s nutrition programmes. This 9 month project aims to provide malnourished children under 5 and pregnant and lactating mothers with a supplementary food ration, in order to maintain or improve their nutritional status and prevent deterioration to severe malnutrition and death. The project will work through the Eritrean Catholic Secretariat’s (ErCS) network of health clinics alongside the Ministry of Health and Unicef and will be implemented in the worst affected areas across all three Catholic eparchies (dioceses) of Eritrea. The projects were implemented through three Eparchies of Karen, Asmara and Barentu, benefiting over 30,000 children and mothers. Although SFP has contributed effectively to improved nutrition status among the beneficiaries, it has not been sustainable, as most children deteriorated back the original health status once discharged from the project. The recovery rates have been extremely low pointing to poor food support systems at the house hold level. As part of project implementation, the Eparchy of Karen collected and collated information on viable food security projects that will facilitate households to produce and access adequate food to sustain good maternal and child nutrition. The purpose of the project is to enhance house hold food security at the grass root level and improve the livelihood of the targeted areas The project will strive to ensure 1. Households vulnerable to malnutrition are planting crops and using sustainable cooking methods to improve the quality and diversity of their diet. 2. Vulnerable communities have access to increased livelihood opportunities and training. By protecting women rights protect women's rights to economic opportunities by enhancing their economic capacity at household level 3.
