Emergency Shelter for Population Affected by the Crisis in Kyrgyzstan

CAFOD is contributing towards the CI EA 09/2010. The project proposes to provide emergency and transitional shelter assistance to an estimated 3,000 households (18,000 people) in the Kyrgyz regions of Osh and Jalal Abad who were affected by the outbreak of violence in June 2010. This includes an estimated 1,500 families, whose homes were looted and burned during the violence. The project will provide these families with essential sleeping items and help them build or build minimal warm shelters at the sites of their destroyed homes before winter. This project will also support the parishes of Osh and Jalal Abad to provide emergency relief to socially vulnerable groups adversely affected by the devastated markets and economy, such as orphans, the disabled, and the elderly. This component may reach another 1,000 to 1,500 particularly vulnerable conflict-affected families. Project activities will be carried out in a way to promote inter-communal cooperation and reconciliation and to maximize income for local vendors and laborers.
