Caragh

Let’s meet Caragh

She is in Manchester campaigning with CAFOD. When lots of people ask the government over a long period to do something we call it a “campaign”.

The eighth Millennium Development Goal involves helping the governments of the poorer countries to find more money. Some of the ways they can be helped to do this are by:

  • aid - rich countries sharing money with poor countries more fairly
  • trade - helping poor countries to sell their crops and goods abroad
  • cancelling debt - rich countries agreeing to forget the money poor countries borrowed and now owe them.

Debt
Many countries spend more money paying back debts to rich countries than they spend on schools and hospitals.

Many people in the UK and other countries have been asking their governments to help poor nations by aid, fairer trade and cancelling debt.

Trade
CAFOD’s campaign at the moment is all about trade – asking for fair rules so that poor countries can sell their goods abroad for a fair price. CAFOD supporters join in special campaign events to let people know about unfair trade. Sometimes they visit MPs or go to the Houses of Parliament to remind the government how important trade is for poor countries.

FACT: Campaigns can make a difference!
