Great South Run 2008
The UK's biggest and most popular ten-mile road running event took place on October 26 in Portsmouth
A team of more than 50 CAFOD supporters were among the 19,000 runners along the rain-soaked 10-mile route around Southsea in Portsmouth.
Lawrence Bryce, 18, withstood the bad conditions to finish in a very respectable 1hr 26 minutes, and said: “I ran it last year and it was wet and windy, so I knew what to expect.
"I also knew that the crowd would be great and support us all the way. It was a challenge, but I’m really glad I’ve done it.”
Alison O'Connor travelled to Africa whilst at university and visited development projects, which inspired her to support CAFOD.
She managed to finish in a very respectable 1hr 31mins, after only three months training.
She said: “I’m so impressed by what CAFOD achieves and the work they’re doing overseas. This is my way of contributing to that, and I’d like to become a parish contact for CAFOD as well, to help them stay in touch with supporters in the UK.”
Three brothers,Adam, Lee and Simon Tindal, all crossed the finish line together, completing the race in one hour 47 minutes.
Adam, 26, a business development manager, said: “We wanted to do something together because Simon and I work away quite a lot. It was good fun."
Meanwhile Dr Peter Adura travelled with his daughter, wife and mother-in-law and their support from the sidelines helped him to finish in 1hr 55 minutes.
He said: “I wouldn’t describe myself as a runner, so it was tough going. But the training went OK and I’ve been able to raise some good money so I’ll definitely try and do it again next year. Hopefully there’ll be better weather!
“I saw a poster for CAFOD at Church a few months ago, and decided to set myself this challenge.
I know they do great work and I wanted to try and support it. The crowd were really great today and with the music as well, it doesn’t seem like hard work. I’m happy to do what I can.”
