David Ford, 43, a Sky Sports News executive producer from West London, completed the course in an impressive 1hr 18 minutes and raised more than £1,000.

“My wife volunteers for CAFOD in the local schools, so I thought that this was a way I could show my support. It’s been tough to race ten miles but the exhilaration of completing it, and knowing that I’ve been able to raise a lot of money makes it worth it.”

Pat Kavanagh, 58, from Chelmsford ran with his son James, 28, but Pat suffered an Achilles injury after a mile and had to grit his teeth to limp on for the rest of the race, determined to finish. Pat said: “I have four children and we all run together, we’re a bit like the tortoise and the hare. They’re faster than me, but I have better endurance.

"Next year if I’m fit we can all try and run together as a family. You have to make do with the talents you have, and we’re really keen to contribute to those less fortunate.”
