A 'Gapper' writes: A year at St Mary's
As a ‘Gaplain’ at St Mary’s you will need to be committed, determined and willing to work as part of a team to contribute to the pastoral care of students. You will help organise extra curricular groups including ACTIVATE, a lower school justice and faith group, and SVP for upper school and Sixth Form. You will need creativity to guide the groups in outreach in the school and the wider community.
You will spend time engaging students with CAFOD and its work, especially after your overseas trip. You will have the opportunity to contribute to lessons throughout the school to share with students the work of CAFOD.
As part of the chaplaincy team at St Mary’s you will spend time mentoring students who have problems at home or in school.
You will have the chance to organise and deliver liturgies in assemblies, in form time and on feast days.
As part of your placement in Blackpool you will also work with local Catholic feeder primary schools. You will spend time in four different schools each across all age groups. Your work in the primary schools will vary from CAFOD activities to engaging children in collective worships.
You will have the opportunity of a lifetime to visit some of CAFOD’s programmes in a developing country. You will be busy both before and after your overseas trip preparing materials with students at St Mary’s and the primary schools. On your return you will have the chance to feedback to schools, churches and CAFOD deanery meetings about your experiences overseas.
Step into the Gap will challenge you, encourage you and inspire you every day. If you have a passion for engaging young people in issues of social justice you will thrive in this gap year and influence many people.
