With its tropical rainforest and spectacular waterfalls, Guyana is a potentially rich and lucrative eco-tourist destination. Yet more than half the population live in poverty and unemployment rates are at an all-time high

Flooding is causing extensive damage to homes, farmland, crops and cattle, destroying people’s livelihoods and prospects of a decent education.

Adequate sea defences, drainage and irrigation are vital, as much of Guyana’s agricultural production, along with its main cities, are on a narrow coastal strip below sea level.
