Promoting racial harmony

Promoting racial harmony

CAFOD partner ROC is promoting racial harmony in Guyana.

Violence between Guyana's two major racial groups has flared in recent years. CAFOD partner Guyana Human Rights Association is working to end this tension

The political party structure reflects this polarisation, with the two major parties (the PPP/C and the PNC/R) being largely formed by Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese respectively.

Tensions tend to flare up around elections.

Guyana Human Rights Association is an active local human rights group, which gets involved in many cases of human rights abuses.

The Amerindians

"Guyana" is an Amerindian word meaning "Land of many waters".

The Amerindians were the country’s first inhabitants but now make up just seven per cent of the population, living mostly in isolated areas away from the coast

It works closely with trade unions, professional organisations, ethnic groups and churches.

Its Rights Of Children project encourages young people to campaign for racial harmony by bringing people from different backgrounds together.

The group gives talks in schools and spreads the message through events and television broadcasts.
