Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous nation and is home to the largest Muslim community in the world - but has faced unprecedented turmoil

Indonesia has suffered in recent years, beginning with the Asian financial crisis, and the fall of President Suharto.

This was followed by the loss of East Timor, growing separatist pressures in Aceh and West Papua, and then the tsunami.

CAFOD spent £2,542,000 in Indonesia in 2008

After its independence in 1945, people in the Aceh region became disaffected as they felt the central government, based 1,000 miles away in Jakarta, exploited the poor province’s natural gas resources.
