In Indonesia, CAFOD partners tackle issues such as emergencies and conflict

Emergencies: On December 26 2004 a massive earthquake triggered a large tsunami just off the coast of the northern end of Sumatra. Nearly 200,000 people in Aceh were killed.

Conflict: At least 10,000 civilians in Aceh have been killed in the ongoing conflict between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian military.

Two days after the tsunami, GAM declared a ceasefire to allow aid into areas of conflict. After months of talks, a peace deal was signed and, on 11 December 2006, regional elections took place for the first time in Aceh.
