New life is fragile - especially in Africa - which is why four Bradford students came up with an award-winning idea of a "gift pack" bringing together all the essentials mums and babies need

We are offering you the opportunity to buy a World Gift of a pack for mums and babies costing £30 – money which will go to support healthcare programmes in Africa.

Training birth attendants in pre- and post-natal care, as well as in safer delivery techniques, can give a new mum and her baby a much better chance of survival. This wonderful gift can also pay for new equipment and vaccines to give babies a much safer, healthier start in life.

Mariom, from Kubum refugee camp in Darfur told us how grateful she was for the help she received from Hawa, a traditional birth attendant who was trained by a CAFOD partner:

“Hawa helped me during the delivery. She washed the baby and me and brought me pain-relief tablets afterwards.”

Please support the girls’ big idea. Order their World Gift below now, and watch a video from their trip

the big idea

Meet the four friends from Bradford whose idea looks set to become a real life-saver…

“Some mums in Africa are the same age as us,” says Katie Dearden (14).

"But being a young mum in poor parts of Africa is very different from here in the UK.

"Ninety out of 1,000 of African babies will die, compared to less than five out of 1,000 UK babies – 18 times more!"

So Katie and three friends from St Joseph’s School, Bradford, set out to help these young mums by entering the competition Solutions for the Planet – the Great Debate. And won!
