Our partners are responding to the floods in Pakistan caused by the monsoon rains
At least 1,100 people have died and, with entire communities devastated, it is now estimated that more than 1.5 million people desperately need help in north-west Pakistan, Punjab and Balochistan.
Heavy monsoon rains that started on 21 July, spread north on 27 July and caused chaos in north-western Pakistan damaging entire villages, roads and bridges. Thousands have been forced to flee their homes and have no way of making a living.
There are fears that diarrhoea and cholera will spread among the homeless. Food and drinking water are in short supply.
At CAFOD, we have contacted our partners to find out what the humanitarian needs are and how they are planning to respond. One of our partners had to evacuate two offices in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and another office is still cut off on both sides by washed away bridges. This is making it difficult for them to assess what is needed.
We expect to have more detailed reports from our local partners very soon and will be making grants to get emergency relief to those who need it most.
