CAFOD honours humanitarian workers on world's first Humanitarian Day

Thursday 19th August 2010 is the first annual World Humanitarian Day

The UN General Assembly has designated the day, in honour of the thousands of people worldwide who have dedicated their lives to humanitarian service and relief. At CAFOD, we couldn’t do the work we do without the humanitarian workers around the world who deliver aid on our behalf and make our projects possible. Here are just three of the many humanitarians make our humanitarian and emergency response work possible.

Marie Josette Delorme-Pierre, CAFOD's Haiti Humanitarian Officer

“In July 2010 I returned as an aid worker with CAFOD, thinking about how I was going to balance both sides of myself: Josette the Haitian and Josette the CAFOD aid worker.”

Marie Josette Delorme-Pierre was born in Haiti and works as CAFOD’s Humanitarian Officer in the country. When the earthquake struck Port-au-Prince in January, Marie Josette returned to the country both as a humanitarian and as a citizen, with family and friends who were deeply and personally affected by the disaster.

Lucy Morris: CAFOD’s Middle East Humanitarian Officer

“I finally understood the true meaning of war in Afghanistan - that it isn't just about the present conflict, but decades upon decades of fighting and heartache.”

Lucy Morris is CAFOD Programme Officer for Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan. She was in Pakistan following the 2005 earthquake and is supporting local partners in projects in Afghanistan. Currently Lucy is working with partners in Pakistan, who are responding to the floods.
