Palestine debate: CAFOD releases joint paper
As the current president of the CIDSE network of Catholic charities, CAFOD has recently been working together with other European Member Organisations on a joint Paper on the situation in Palestine.
The paper is aimed at European Union decision makers, as the European Union is currently the largest donor to the Palestinian Authority.
It suggests that funding for public services such as teachers, police service and healthcare would be more effective if Palestine’s self-determination is realised internationally and on the ground.
The right to self-determination would give Palestine a voice in international affairs, and would mean that Palestinian citizens, who are technically stateless, would be able to enjoy the full extent of their human rights.
The paper also considers some of the implications of today’s request to the United Nations by President Mahmoud Abbas for recognition of Palestinian statehood.
