Watch video from the Religious Lobby

Almost 300 members of religious orders with placards and banners called on Parliament to "Stop Climate Chaos", and met with their own MPs to urge changes in the Climate Change Bill [CAFOD]
Almost 300 members of religious orders called on Parliament to "Stop Climate Chaos", and met with MPs to urge changes in the Climate Change Bill [CAFOD]

Hundreds of religious brothers and sisters descended on Westminster to demand MPs strengthen the Climate Change Bill and "kick the carbon habit" for the sake of the poor

Among those lobbying were Fr Christopher Jamison (Abbot of Worth Abbey, the focus of BBC TV series The Monastery) and Mark Dowd (journalist and documentary-maker, as well as a former Dominican Friar).

Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for the Environment and Rural Affairs, met a delegation from the lobby to hear their concerns and dozens of MPs were lobbied by their constituents.

The lobby, organised by CAFOD, the Conference of Religious, and Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Links (JPIC) highlighted the fact that people in developing countries are the first to experience the devastating impacts of climate change – despite contributing to it the least.

Chris Bain, CAFOD director said: "We desperately need to see a strong Bill going through Parliament, which shows the UK is taking tough action on climate change, and gives the government a mandate to speak out at crucial international talks."
