TV star backs Unearth Justice

Actor Ben Price is joining CAFOD’s call to the gold industry to turn over a new leaf, saying "If I buy gold for my wife I want to be sure I'm not funding misery for someone else"

A committed supporter of Unearth Justice, Ben took part in the 2006 Great North Run to raise awareness of the campaign, and also helped CAFOD to "Spread the love" early in 2007.

Ben, famous for his role in the BBC’s Casualty, says: "For most people in the UK gold is precious, something you give to show love and commitment.

"But what you don't get shown is where it comes from, how the mining can destroy people's lives, forcing people from their homes, polluting their water supplies and damaging their environments.

Personal impact

Ben also links the campaign to end dirty gold practices with the livesimply challenge, which asks us to live sustainably and in solidarity with the poor.

He adds: “livesimply asks us to take a look at our own lifestyles and our personal impact on poverty and the environment. If I buy gold for my wife I want to be sure I'm not funding misery for someone else.

"The jewellery industry has a responsibility and a real opportunity to change it right now - they've got to set standards so that when we buy gold we can be certain we're not harming people or the planet.

“I'm asking you to join me in telling the gold industry that we're watching and waiting for them to turn over a new leaf."
