Aid: Race against time to pass new Bill
Today the government released copies of draft legislation that will commit the UK to spending 0.7 per cent of gross national income on aid by 2013.
Dr Amy Pollard, CAFOD's aid effectiveness policy analyst, said: "The increased funding would have a huge impact on the lives of poor people in the developing world, and we have been eagerly awaiting the legislation since it was announced in the Queen's Speech in November. The race is now on to pass the bill before parliamentary time runs out.
"The draft legislation is simple, sensible stuff. It lays out the duty to dedicate 0.7 per cent gross national income to aid from 2013, and states that the Secretary of State has to report to parliament if the target is not met.
"Given that David Cameron says he wants to meet the 0.7 per cent target, there is no reason for his party not to support this legislation. At CAFOD, we are calling on all parties to support the bill and see it through the House quickly, so that funds can reach the people who so desperately need it."
