At the event on November 27, Baroness Williams plans to explore how the world economic crisis may mark the end of liberalised capitalism - and what insights the Christian community can offer into the possible paths ahead.

She says: “Globalisation – everything connected to everything – undermines the authority of national governments. Yet it is national governments that are expected to respond to a world economic crisis.”

Baroness Shirley Williams is a renowned politician and academic. Serving as a life peer in the House of Lords, she is also Professor Emerita of Electoral Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a member of the Tablet Trust.

The 2009 Pope Paul VI Memorial Lecture, entitled “Capitalism, Catholicism and community: Harmony or dissonance?” will take place at the Emmanuel Centre, Westminster, London.

The lecture is to be chaired by Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP, a prolific lecturer, theologian, former Master General of the Dominican Order, and a member of CAFOD’s Board of Trustees.
