Factsheets on global justice issues

1: Aid (1.55 MB)

Aid is money donated by governments and charities to other countries in times of need. Responsible aid aims to help people out of poverty through education and training.

2: Debt (1.76 MB)

Major international debt is a key factor keeping many countries in poverty. Various initiatives have been launched, but not all have worked.

3: Millennium Development Goals (993.42 kB)

In 2000 the UN decided on eight goals which would potentially transform the lives of thousands in developing countries.

4: Poverty (842.11 kB)

The formal UN definition of 'poverty' refers to anyone living on less than $1.25 (80p) a day. 1.44 billion people are now estimated to be living in poverty.

5: Trade (1.34 MB)

Our global economy is built on trade, but it gives Multinational Corporations the ability to influence government policy, and great power over the lives of their employees.

6: Emergencies (1.40 MB)

Emergencies can result from human actions or natural disasters, but in either case the speed and nature of the international response is crucial.

7: Health (1.08 MB)

As the global community develops we are continually faced with new and complex world health issues, and the damage often falls heaviest on people living in extreme poverty.

8: HIV and AIDS (727.34 kB)

There have been huge medical advances in the treatment of HIV, but still not everyone has access. In 2011 there were nearly 7 million people on treatment but there are still 9 million awaiting this life-saving medication.
