Raising the voice of the poor
The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) played an important role in challenging apartheid.
Now they face the challenge of raising the voice of the poor within the decision-making circles of the South African government.
HIV and AIDS
The SACBC AIDS Office supports small, emerging initiatives, which would struggle to access other funding, particularly from the government.
The AIDS Office works closely with the Justice and Peace Department to focus on child-related policy development, and on access to treatment and care. This includes liaising with the national Treatment Action Campaign, which campaigns for medical treatment to be made affordable and accessible to people with HIV.
Justice and Peace
The SACBC Justice and Peace Department is working towards economic justice, including the promotion of fairer trading systems.
The department also works to promote equality between men and women, and addresses issues such as violence and social responsibility.
The Justice and Peace Department participates in the Jubilee debt campaign, and is involved in wider African solidarity programmes, including support for Sudan peace processes and work in Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
