The Great North Run is the world's biggest half marathon, and celebrates its 25th staging in 2005. Since the first event 642,221 people have crossed the finish line in South Shields, including thousands of CAFOD runners.
The Great South Run has been held since 1991 and has seen a steady increase in numbers over the years as its popularity has grown - more than 16,000 people now take part.
