Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 – A BIG thank you!
Thank you for supporting Fairtrade Fortnight , which took place this year from 28 February to 13 March. Thousands of you got involved by buying Fairtrade products, running events and promoting the Fairtrade brand in schools, parishes and universities across the country.
Fairtrade Producer Tour
One of the highlights of the fortnight was the Fairtrade Producer Tour that travelled around the UK, giving campaigners the chance to hear from producers about their experiences of growing Fairtrade produce in their country.
Campaigner Lyn Cutler attended a talk by Philemon Allen, the Vice-President of the Windward Islands Farmers’ Association (WINFA) and a grower of Fairtrade bananas. She commented “People have gone away inspired, inspired because they heard the good news stories and because they’ve heard what they can do to make a difference”.
Philemon himself said the experience had been great. “It was really inspiring to see schools signed up as Fairtrade schools, churches supporting Fairtrade to the fullest, and knowing that we have over 500 countries involved in Fairtrade... I think what I have gathered here in my experience...really shows me there’s an interest growing, and the expansion of Fairtrade is really on the right track here in the UK.”
Supporters also organised a huge range of events as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, including street theatre in Frome, a concert and fashion show in Birmingham, an indoor football tournament in Ullapool and the creation of a Fairtrade mosaic in Shirley, as well as Fairtrade coffee mornings up and down the country.
'Fruit-hat challenge'
Others took part in the Fairtrade Foundation’s 'show-off your label' game, which involved completing a series of challenges during the fortnight, such as the ‘fruit-hat challenge’, which was won by Wayne Gilbey (pictured).
Although Fairtrade Fortnight has finished for 2011, the Fairtrade Foundation is still collecting bunting as part of its Fairtrade Bunting Bonanza! Made from Fairtrade cotton, the bunting was given out to schools, groups and churches across the UK to highlight the importance of fairtrade and promote fairtrade cotton. Supporters were invited to decorate the bunting with messages of support for fairtrade and then send it back to the Foundation, who hope to break the world record for the longest ever stretch of bunting!
Thank you for the part you played in making Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 a huge success!
