Equality is essential if we are to tackle poverty, and both men and women are part of the solution

In every culture, there are differences between women's and men's roles and responsibilities. In many developing countries, women have inferior access to resources such as land, education, credit and authority.

Higher rates of illiteracy among women limit their employment opportunities, leaving them trapped in unskilled, low-paid jobs.

Support for women

Government policies to support farmers often neglect women - yet, thanks to conflict, HIV, and men migrating to cities, women are doing more agricultural work than ever .

Women are also more vulnerable to HIV than men because they have fewer rights and resources to call upon, and are sometimes forced to barter sexual favours to survive.

Equality of education is also an absolute necessity for poverty eradication, and world leaders have adopted the goal of achieving equal access for girls and boys to schooling by the year 2015.
