Although democracy is improving and levels of corruption are falling, around half the population still live in poverty, with 15 per cent in extreme poverty

From 1980-2000, Peru suffered widespread human rights violations during conflict between the armed forces and opposition groups such as the Shining Path.

Abuses included disappearances, executions, unfair trials and torture.

Peru returned to democracy with free and fair elections in 2001, which brought Alejandro Toledo to power, and its Truth and Reconciliation Commission has reported on human rights violations.

CAFOD spent £338,000 in Peru in 2008

But half the workforce lacks adequate employment, and charges for public healthcare have left 20 per cent of people unable to afford medical attention.
