As part of its vision, CAFOD looks forward to a world in which the rights and dignity of each person are respected. This extends to our staff and supporters as well as the poor communities we work with overseas. In line with the Data Protection Act 1998, CAFOD is committed to ensuring that it not only meets the legal requirements but also establishes a culture of good practice regarding personal information about its supporters.
These principles apply to all our communications, however this statement focuses on our use of personal information collected electronically through the website or email and SMS-texting. Given the changing nature of electronic communications, CAFOD reserves the rights to change the details of this privacy statement by posting changes online.
What personal information does CAFOD collect?
On this website, CAFOD and its trading company will only collect the personal information that you provide. There are various occasions where you will be asked to give personal information, for example resources and donations forms as well as sign-up lists. You may also provide personal information when you contact CAFOD directly via emails and SMS-texting.
On the website, CAFOD tracks non-personal statistical information about visits to the site through a tracking programme that shows how many visits each page receives, the route taken through the pages and other general information. CAFOD uses this information to help us understand more about how our site is used and work on ways to improve it. This information is not linked to any personal details on the actual visitors.
How does CAFOD store the information it collects?
When CAFOD receives personal information from you via the website or email, it is legally obliged to keep this information up-to-date and secure. Within CAFOD, only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, our supporter services staff) are granted access to personal information. When CAFOD provides personal data to an external agency for a specific project such as the mailing out of our newsletter, this is done under strict agreements regarding the security and confidentiality of all personal data.
CAFOD takes particular care over online giving. CAFOD uses one of the world’s leading online payment companies, Worldpay, which specialises in the secure capture and processing of online transactions. The credit card form is secure and your information is encrypted and stored on a secure database.
Unfortunately, despite all these measures, no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while it strives to protect your personal information, CAFOD cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk.
How does CAFOD use the information it stores?
CAFOD stores your details for internal monitoring purposes only. We will not use them to contact you unless you request communications from us.
If at any point, you do not wish to receive information from CAFOD, contact the Data Protection Officer (details below) and ask for your record to be amended accordingly.
Who is my information shared with?
CAFOD does not sell or supply data to third parties. Your data is only passed onto specific agencies outside CAFOD who are working on CAFOD’s behalf, for example mailing out newsletters. This is done under strict agreements regarding the security and confidentiality of all personal data.
When participating in an online action on CAFOD’s website, your contact details may be seen by the target of your action. For example, Corporations and Governments which receive web, e-mail or fax communications via an online action on our website, could respond to your personal e-mail or physical address if you have provided these. These bodies also have obligations under current Data Protection laws. How can I change my personal contact details or stop receiving materials from CAFOD?
CAFOD is working on ways to make it easier for you to review and correct the information it keeps about you. In the meantime, if you inform us of changes to your details, or if you want CAFOD to stop sending you certain, or all, communications, we will amend your details as necessary.
How can I see what information CAFOD holds about me?
Under the Data Protection Act 1988, its your right to see all the information which CAFOD currently holds about you via a Subject Access Report. If you would like to see what information we hold about you please contact the Data Protection Officer at CAFOD (address below).
It will help to speed up the application if you complete this form . CAFOD charges a £10 administration fee for all Subject Access Reports. Once payment has been received, we will respond within 40 days.
If I am under 18, can I provide personal information to CAFOD?
If you are aged 18 or under, please obtain your parent/guardian's permission beforehand whenever you provide personal information to CAFOD.
What if I upload material to the website?
All material uploaded to our website is subject to approval by CAFOD before being used. By uploading material in the form of photographs, videos, stories or any other format onto our site you are automatically agreeing to CAFOD editing and using your material on the website and in future promotional material or events. This agreement is lifelong and royalty free and non-exclusive to CAFOD.
You must be over 18 or over and if not you must have the express permission of your parent or guardian to upload the material. Material must not violate any copyright laws, the rights of any third party or any other laws. Photographs and videos must have been taken with the knowledge of the subjects, or where the subjects are under 18, with the permission of their parent or guardian. All subjects must have given permission for the material to be used by CAFOD.
By submitting material you agree that CAFOD has the right to share the material with any third party involved in the submission and receipt of the material as well as any third parties which CAFOD uses to act on their behalf.
Under certain laws and regulations CAFOD might be asked to disclose information to government agencies or employees by submitting material you authorise CAFOD to do this without having to give you prior notice.
CAFOD will use any material in accordance with our own data policy and the Data Protection Act (1988).
