As we mark three years of war in Sudan on 15th April, Kayode Akintola - CAFOD’s Head of Region in Africa - is making a special appeal to the Catholic community for monthly support.
“Our sisters and brothers in Sudan feel abandoned. The gap between overwhelming needs and available support is massive. This is why monthly giving is so vital – so that we can stay present and keep saving lives - until peace is restored. When we give monthly, we show that love of neighbour is stronger than violence, stronger than despair, stronger than war.”
4 ways your parish can stand with Sudan
Share the appeal - Ask your priest to read out this short announcement at the end of Mass and add this notice to your newsletter. There is also a poster for your noticeboard. Your parish's support is a powerful act of love against the violence of the war.
Pray for Sudan - Use our prayers of intercession to come together and pray for the people of Sudan and for a lasting peace.
Hand out stickers - The Catholic Church is one of the few voices consistently raising awareness of this often forgotten crisis. Order our 'I stand with Sudan' stickers and hand them out after Mass as a public sign of solidarity with the people of Sudan.
Send a message to the Foreign Secretary - Share this petition with your parish calling on the UK Government to take urgent, concrete action to end the suffering in Sudan.
How much the Sudanese people are suffering, innocent victims of this inhuman tragedy! I renew my fervent appeal to the warring parties to silence their weapons

What is happening in Sudan?
The war in Sudan has forced millions of people to flee their homes, creating one of the world’s largest displacement crises. As families fleeing their homes to escape the violence run out of food, water and medicine, it is estimated that over 30 million people are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
On the first anniversary of the war, Kayode Akintola, CAFOD's Head of Region for Africa, and Telley Sadia, Country Representative for Sudan, explained what is happening and how we can help.
Frequently asked questions
Monthly gifts mean that we can give long-term, practical help to families who are struggling for survival due to the ongoing war in Sudan.
Kayode Akintola, Head of Region for Africa, recently spent four days with our partners and the Church in Sudan. He reported that:
"Our partner Caritas Sudan, alongside other local organisations, is providing food, cash assistance, safe water, nutrition and more. They are saving lives every day. But the gap between overwhelming needs and available support is massive. This crisis requires sustained, dependable support the kind that allows our partners to plan, to stay present and to keep saving lives even when the world’s attention moves on."
By standing with families in Sudan each month, our partners can plan the long term support our neighbours affected by the war need.
We completely understand that not everyone will be able to set up a monthly gift and we would be so grateful for any gift that people in your parish are able to give to help families affected by this war.
Yes, when people in your parish visit our Sudan appeal page they will be given the choice to make a one-off donation or to take up a monthly gift. We completely understand that not everyone will be able to set up a monthly gift and we would be so grateful for any gift your parishioners are able to give to help families affected by this war.
Please thank parishioners for their consistent support to CAFOD which enables us to respond to emergencies as well as fund long-term development work. You could suggest that they may want to give a single donation instead to stand with Sudan. Parishioners can make both single and regular gifts online via the appeal page.
Your parish may have been one of the hundreds of parishes across England and Wales that supported an appeal for Sudan in 2024. With the generous donations from all the parishes that took part, our local partners have been able to successfully distribute emergency food packages and helped to fix water pipelines damaged by the conflict. We have also been supporting children whose families have been displaced by fighting.
Our impact in 2024:
We reached 116,449 people in Sudan.
Our healthcare programmes, which are helping to tackle the spread of diseases such as cholera, reached over 300,000 people.
The funds raised at this appeal have helped many families affected by the outbreak of war in Sudan but the ongoing crisis means our neighbours in still need support. So many families are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. We are ready to scale up our work and to help our partners to respond to the growing need but to do this we require additional funds.
The Sudan Crisis has not been making the news, but the scale of this emergency is huge. Over 150,000 people have already lost their lives. 9 to 9.3 million people – over the population of London – have fled their homes inside Sudan. Whilst neighbouring countries like Egypt and South Sudan now host an estimated 4.3 million refugees.
So many families in Sudan are in urgent need of humanitarian aid, and our partners are able to respond to this crisis and we can scale up our work in Sudan. However, to do this we require additional funds. We do understand that not everyone is able to donate again after Lent and we are very thankful for everyone who made a Lenten gift, which will be used to help communities across the world.
